Summary

Description

John Lennon's Mellotron

               John Lennon Mellotron
                      Mark II
             Collection of David Scaile

John Lennon purchased this early analog synthesizer
in 1965. Essentially 70 tape players in a large cabinet,
the Mellotron called up pre-recorded sounds based on
the settings and keys. Because it used a motor-driven
player, the pitch would waver giving the sound
generated an eerie feel. This Mellotron was played by
Paul McCartney when the Beatles recorded
"Strawberry Fields Forever" and by Lennon on
"Flying."
