Description
English: Lugarite from the Permian of Scotland. (~5.2 centimeters across at its widest)

Lugarite is an extremely rare intrusive igneous rock having an alkaline chemistry and a porphyritic texture. It is only known from one locality: the Lugar Sill near the town of Lugar, Scotland. The unit contains alkaline mafic rocks and ultramafic rocks.

The prominent black, elongated phenocrysts in this lugarite sample are kaersutite amphibole. Other minerals present in this material include titanaugite, nepheline, analcime, and labradorite feldspar.

Geologic unit: Lugar Sill, Sakmarian Stage, Early Permian, 288 Ma

Locality: Logan-Lugar-Cronberry area, Ayrshire, southern Scotland
