English: London, England, 1865 Medal for the Opening of the German Gymnasium.
Pewter medallion, d. = 51 mm. The German Gymnasium, London is a heritage building near King's Cross Station. It was the first gymnasium built in England from 1864 to 1865. The National Olympian Association used the Gymnasium as one of the venues for its first ever Games here in 1866. These continued annually until the Olympic Games were held in London in 1908. Jahn, Friedrich Ludwig, German gymnastics educator, 1778 Lanz, Brandenburg-Prussia - 1852 Freyburg (Unstrut), Saxony-Anhalt. "GUT- HEIL!" on shield between 2 gymnasts with flag. / 7 lines: "Zum Andenken an die Einweihung der Deutschen Turnhalle in London am 28. Januar 1865". Surrounded by 4 scrolls with the motto of the Turnvater Friedrich Ludwig Jahn: "FRISCH" "FROMM" "FROH" "FREI". Forrer III, p. 145. Medallist: A.
