Description	Detail of J. R. R. Tolkien's preliminary map of Wilderland. The publishers asked for the map to be redrawn to suit line-block printing better, and with improved lettering. Eventually Christopher Tolkien redraw the map for publication.

Minimal use (WP:NFCC#3)	This is the only example of Tolkien's own artwork for The Hobbit in the article. It is used only here, and at the usual sorry resolution.
Respect for commercial opportunities (WP:NFCC#2)	It seems quite unlikely. The image has been in print since 1995. A thumbnail of low quality, in a detail cropped from the original, is no competition for the high-quality images in the published books.
