| Description | Picture of Fritz Scholder's painting Indian Image (1972) at the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C., in 2023. A figurative painting of a Native American person on a horse in a field. The figure and horse are rendered nearly exclusively in smooth black paint as if cut from black paper and pasted onto the painting, and the two figures blend into one another seamlessly. The only detailing on the horse or the person includes white markings on two of the horse's hooves and its snout, and white markings on the person's face, headdress, and stirrups. The figures are pictured in an empty field covered in short green grass painted in small, staccato-like brushstrokes. The ground is rendered in shades of orange and deep brown, and the sky is painted in a flat, monochromatic light pinkish brown, with a thin strip of lilac at the bottom of the horizon. |
