Summary

Description
English: HMS Cornwall alongside the Great Wharf in the North Yard (the fortified original yard) of the Royal Naval Dockyard on the island of Ireland in the Imperial fortress colony of Bermuda, circa 1918. Bermuda was the base of the North America and West Indies Station of the Royal Navy. A visiting submarine of the allied United States Navy is in the foreground. The British Government permitted the United States to establish facilities in Bermuda at White's Island and the former Army Ordnance Corps munitions depot on Agar's Island from its entry into hostilities for the duration of the First World War to serve smaller vessels crossing the Atlantic in stages. The Royal Naval Dockyard consequently also provided repair and maintenance facilities for United States Navy vessels.
