Summary

Description
English: Clarions in the Grenville arms, seen on a bench end, Sutcombe church, Devon. Bench end in St Andrew's Church, Sutcombe, Devon. Arms of Grenville of Bideford in Devon and of Stowe in Cornwall: Gules, three clarions or. Other bench ends in this church may be dated to c.1550 from arms and marriages depicted. It is unclear what connection the Grenville family had to this parish. Possibly it refers to Sir Richard Grenville, Sheriff of Devon in 1532, as a means of showing respect to that officer, appointed by King Henry VIII. Most of the other bench ends relate to the Prideaux family of Thuborough, Sutcombe. This carving provides a valuable insight into the nature of the object depicted, a clarion, which is clearly a wind musical instrument, as shown by the "labium" or air holes in the pipes, akin to an w:organ pipe. Some heraldic writers describe these items as "horse rests", apparently for resting a lance upon, clearly in error. One other depiction, sculpted in stone on the monument of Sir Thomas Grenville (d.1513) in St Mary's Church, Bideford, also shows these holes.
