Summary

Description

Gibraltar lies at the South of the Iberian Peninsula, overlooks the Strait of Gibraltar and is a "British Overseas Territory".

The airport, which originated as a RAF base during World War Two, was built on the only suitable area of flat ground and is famous now as an unusual airport.

It takes up the whole width of the isthmus between Spain & the Territory and has the sea at each end. In addition the main road (Winston Churchill Avenue) crosses the middle of the runway and traffic must stop at traffic lights whilst aircraft land and takeoff.

Seen here an Airbus A320 of former airline "Monarch" is taking off and is not very far from the end of the runway which is 5511 feet (1680 metres) long. That length is not particularly great, but there are other airports in the UK with shorter runways (London City Airport, for example - which also has water at each end!).

Also seen in the photo is a squadron of RAF Tornado aircraft, visiting (the airport is still an RAF base and owned by them) and the border with Spain is a simple chain-link fence a few yards beyond the airport. My photo was taken from part-way up the Rock.

A new access road to the town has been under construction for quite a long time and work can be seen in progress at the end of the runway and just this side of the border.
