Summary

Description
English: 21 July 2016. Further illustration of the downgrading of Marcus Garvey Library by Haringey Council. Ignoring assurances that the name would not be changed, it's now called "Marcus Garvey Centre - Library and Customer Services".

I visited with the Friends of Marcus Garvey campaigning Group to be shown the refurbished library space and hear about the Council's further plans.

The Council officially reopened the building on 13 July 2016. The guest of honour was Acting Jamaican High Commissioner, Diedre Mills. Ms Mills mentioned that "the library that bears the name of Jamaica’s first National Hero, has been improved and expanded." “I am pleased, because the library has the name of a very special and important Jamaican. He charted a course that inspired many people of colour. He taught us how we can continue to uplift each other,” she said. [Source: Jamaica Information Service News.]

Actually part of the library space had been handed over to a Customer Services Centre previously sited in Apex House. (A building near Seven Sisters station now privatised and demolished.) In addition the name of the library had been changed and even the signage downgraded, as my photo shows. Despite several assurances to elected councillors. This disgracefully broken promise was not kept until 2019. ___________________________________
