Summary

Description

English: Employee houses of the former Commonwealth Railways at Loongana, Western Australia, 1147.5 km from Port Augusta, South Australia, on the 1693.5 km-long Trans-Australian Railway between Port Augusta and Kalgoorlie. The former settlement is at (approximately) the middle of the Nullarbor Plain and is on the longest length of straight track in the world, 478.193 km long. The railway is part of the 4352 kilometre Sydney–Perth rail corridor. The houses were for employees at a time when it was necessary to have local maintenance crews available; now maintenance is undertaken by contractors who live elsewhere. Since the photo was taken in 2006, all buildings have been demolished or removed from Loongana and many other localities on the Trans-Australian Railway. As of 2021, trains do not stop at Langoona, but there is a triangle for reversing rail vehicles.
