Peter Michael Hornung, Ny Dansk Kunsthistorie, volume IV, 1993, page 176. Hornung writes that Henningsen got the idea by coincidence. One morning he walked by the Adressecontoir in Vimmelskaftet 43, Copenhagen, and saw a jobless man looking for offers on the board, and there the idea for a painting was born.
