Object history
Deutsch: Wittenberge erhielt seit 1264 die Stadtrechte. Das Wappen geht wahrscheinlich auf ältere Siegel zurück, das älteste bekannte Siegel stammt jedoch aus dem Jahr 1633. Das Wappen zeigt die Stadt mit dem Brandenburgischen Adler, da die Stadt seit etwa 1300 im brandenburgischen Besitz war. Bei Einführung des Wappens zwischen 1892 bis 1927 hing eine Gans auf dem Mittelturm. Diese Gans stammt aus dem Wappen der Herren von Putlitz, die um 1200 die Burg gründeten, um die sich die Stadt entwickelte.
English: Wittenberge was called a city since 1264. The arms are likely based on older seals, but the oldest known seal dates from 1633. The arms display the city with the eagle of Brandenburg, as the city was a possession of Brandenburg since around 1300. Between 1892 and 1927, when the present arms were adopted, there was a goose on the central tower. This goose was taken from the arms of the Lords of Putlitz, who founded the castle in 1200, around which the city developed.
