Summary

Description
English: Crowns Engine Houses The famous Crowns Engine Houses, part of the disused Botallack tin mine, perched above the sea on Botallack Head.

There were many mine shafts sunk at Botallack, the most impressive being the Boscawen Diagonal Shaft which ran out under the sea. The shaft was sunk at an angle of 32½° and extended out to sea for about half a mile, reaching a total vertical depth of 250 fathoms (1500 feet) beneath sea level.

The lower of the two engine houses seen here was used to pump water from the mine. The higher engine house provided the winding power to get the men down to the workface and remove the ore they dug out.
