Councillor James Fletcher, chairman of the Sunderland Labour party, pluckily rescued a child who was in danger of being run over by a 'bus at Ryhope, near Sunderland. Councillor Fletcher, who is a 'bus inspector, jumped from a 'bus going at full speed, and, dashing into the road, caught up the child in front of an oncoming 'bus. He fell against a motor-car travelling in the opposite direction, and was nearly jammed between the car and the 'bus, the back wheel of which ripped off the heel of his boot. The child was unhurt except for bruises.
