Pendant ce temps, linfante cheminait. Elle allabien loin, bien loin, encore plus loin, et cherchaitpartout une place; mais quoique, par charité, onlui donnât à manger, on la trouvait si crasseuse,que personne nen voulait. Cependant elle entra dans une belle ville, à laporte de laquelle était une métairie dont la fer-mière avait besoin dun souillon pour laver lestorchons et nettoyer les dindons et lauge descochons. Cette femme, voyant cette voyageuse simalpropre, lui proposa dentrer chez elle ; ce quelinfante accepta de grand cœur, tant elle étaitlasse davoir tant marché.

Un jour quassise près dune claire fontaine, oùelle déplorait souvent sa triste condition, ellesavisa de sy mirer, leffroyable peau dâne quifaisait sa coiffure et son habillement lépouvanta.Honteuse de cet ajustement, elle se décrassa levisage et les mains, qui devinrent plus blanchesque livoire, et son beau teint reprit sa fraîcheurnaturelle.
