Summary

Description Congregation Shaaray Tefila was founded in 1845 when it separated from Congregation B'nai Jeshurun, and worshipped first at a Romanesque sanctuary built in 1847 at 112 Wooster Street, designed by Leopold Eidlitz and Otto Blesch, then, briefly, at an armory, before moving in 1865 to 127 West 44th Street, to a Henry Fernbach-designed Moorish-Romanesque synagogue. Then, in 1893-94, the congregation had Arnold W. Brunner design a new synagogue for 160 West 82nd Street, in the Byzantine-Moorish style - this was the West End Synagogue, still in use as the Ukrainian Autocephalic Orthodox Church of St. Volodymyr. The congregation's current home at 250 East 79th Street on the corner of Second Avenue in the Upper East Side neighborhood of Manhattan was built in 1946 as the Colony movie theatre, and was converted to a synagogue by John J. McNamara and Horace Ginsbern & Associates in 1959. (Sources: From Abyssinian to Zion (2004) and NYC GIS map)
