Summary[edit]

The cockscomb or cock's comb, also known as a stone mason's drag, is the tool in the foreground marked "BRADS".

Cockscomb is one of the English names for a wooden handled tool with serrated blades set underneath it and used for working soft limestones by dragging the blades to make a more level surface.[1]

As of 2008, they are still made by modern stone tool supplier, Joseph et Fils, Paris, and termed "Chemin de fer Parisien ou Bordelais" (literally "Road of iron [or railway] Parisian or of Bordeaux].[2]

The firm Auriou, which also made the tool, has recently ceased trading (as of 2008).[3]

The tool is also spelt as "cock's comb" and can be "a thin shaped steel plate with a serrated edge. It is used for finishing moldings and other shapes."[4]

"Stone mason's drag" is another name for the tool. Mediaeval example.[5]
