theytaught me was gradually confirmed and myconvictions strengthened. While I was travel-ing to this city, I was studying the ■ Papers onthe Bible, edited by our esteemed Dr. Mac-donald, and when I came nearly to the endof the book, on Tuesday, July 31, all mydoubts vanished, my faith in Christianity wasthoroughly confirmed, and I felt a call that Imust not delay in confessing Christ. In responseto that call I hurried on, and I am now confessingbefore you my faith in Christ. REV. ANDREW P. HAPPER, D. D., M. D. WILLIAM RANKIN, ESQ., NEWARK, N. J. The name of Dr. Happer has been asso-ciated with missions in China for the lastfifty years. He was born in MonongahelaCity, Pa., October 20, 1818, and died atWooster, Ohio, October 27, 1894. Thetreaty of Nanking, of August, 1842, whichopened five ports of China to commerce andthe Gospel, gave enhanced interest to thePresbyterian Boards missions in that empireand the next year special funds were con-tributed for their enlargement. Andrew Patton Happer, then a graduate ofJefferson College, having completed his theo-logical course at Allegheny, was studyingmedicine in Philadelphia, where he tookthe degree of M. D. in the University ofPennsylvania. In 1844 he was ordained bythe Presbytery of Ohio, and on the 22d ofJune that year, sailed from New York forCanton in company with five other missiona-ries of the Board, who were destined formore northern ports, and arrived at Macaoon the 22d of October.
