Summary

Description

The reverse side of William Barton's design for the Great Seal of the United States, done as part of the third committee's attempt for a design. This was eventually used as the reverse side of the final seal, although with changed mottos. The pyramid came from an earlier Continental currency note by Francis Hopkinson. Barton originally put a palm tree on top (the symbolism being "The Palm Tree, when burnt down to the very Root, naturally rises fairer than ever"), but changed his mind. The Eye of Providence was an element from the design of the first committee six years earlier.

Barton's full blazon was:[1]

A Pyramid of thirteen Strata, (or Steps) Or, and, on the Summit of it a Palm Tree, proper. In the Zenith, an Eye, surrounded with a Glory, proper.

In a Scroll, above, or in the Margin – Deo Favente. ("With God's Favor" or "God Favoring")
The Exergue – Perennis. ("Everlasting")
