Summary

Description
English: Baptist Chapel, Stamford. Baptist chapel frontage added in 1900 when the older building was extended. The "Strict Baptist" congregation was founded after a public meeting in October 1831 when William Tiptaft, a well known Dissenter, addressed the congregation of the Independent chapel (later the Congregational, and now the United Reformed church) in Stamford Assembly Rooms. One of the congregation, Dr. de Merveilleux, was so inspired as to build a chapel in North Street at his own expense to follow this line of worship. Construction started in 1834, and the chapel enlarged in 1838 and 1900. See also section 39 of LinkExternal link It is properly called the "Strict and Particular Baptist Chapel", where both Particular and Strict (Restricted) refer to the belief in a small band of people chosen uniquely to be saved in the afterlife. I am told that these days many Formerly Strict Baptists call themselves 'Grace Baptists'. This church is not among them.
