Ελληνικά: Δύο στρώματα ελαφρόπετρας, μακρά διαβρωμένα και εξορύσσονται σε λατομεία, σε ένα στρώμα επίσης μικρής κλίμακας εισβολές πετρωμάτων της Μεγάλης Μινωικής, Ύστερης Εποχής του χαλκού (3,5 ka) ηφαιστειακής έκρηξης της Καλντέρας θήρας/Σαντορίνη (Μινωική έκρηξη). Το φωτογραφικό αντικείμενο βρίσκεται στη βόρεια πλαγιά της Νότιας χερσονήσου της Σαντορίνης, κοντά στο "λιμάνι του Μπάλου", δίπλα στο σύγχρονο χωριό Ακρωτήρι.

Τα εδάφη, όταν είναι ξεπερασμένα, είναι πλούσια σε μέταλλα, δηλαδή γόνιμα. Όλα τα είδη φυτών ευδοκιμούν παντού στο νησί (εδώ: Image:Lampranthus spectabilis1.jpg) - ακόμη και τα εμβολιασμένα φυτά αμπέλου.

Πάνω από 650 ka υπήρξαν πέντε μεγάλες σειρές ηφαιστειακών εκρήξεων. Οι εκρήξεις γύρω στα 3,5 ka έθαψαν τον μεγάλο Μινωικό πολιτισμό κάτω από αρκετά μέτρα ελαφρόπετρας. Μόνο το 1967, η αρχαιολογία ξεκίνησε με την ανασκαφή της εξαιρετικά πολιτισμένης προϊστορικής πόλης "Ακρωτήρι Θήρας". Τα ευρήματα, όπως σε αυτή τη φωτογραφία, θάφτηκαν κάτω από στρώματα ελαφρόπετρας.

English: Two layers of pumice, long time eroded, mined in quarries, and in one layer small scale rock intrusions of the great minoan, Late-Bronze-Age (3,5 ka) volcanic eruption of the caldera island Thera/Santorini (Minoan Eruption). The photo object is located at the north cliff face of Santorini’s southern peninsula, close to “Valos harbour (Λιμάνι Μπάλου)”, next to the modern village Akrotiri.

The eruption soils, when weathered, are rich in minerals, thus fertile, plants of all kind (here: "Lampranthus spectabilis") flourish everywhere on the island - even the demanding wine plants (Santorini (wine)).

Since 650 ka there were five mayor volcanic eruption series. The fifth mayor event series buried the advanced Minoan civilization under many meters of pumice. Only by 1967 archaeology began to dig out the exceptionally civilized prehistoric city called “Akrotiri)”. The findings were buried under layers of pumice like those in the photo.

Deutsch: Eruptionsschichten und Erosionshalden von Bimsstein und kleinen Gesteinseinschlüssen der minoischen Auswurfsphasen (spätbronzezeitlich vor 3,6 ka, Minoische Eruption) der Vulkaninsel Thera/Santorin. Das Foto entstand am Nordhang der südlichen Halbinsel bei „Valos harbour (Λιμάνι Μπάλου)“, am Rand des heutigen Dorfs Akrotiri.

Sobald die Eruptionsböden verwittert sind, sind sie sehr fruchtbar, weil sich die zahlreichen Mineralien in ihnen durch Nebel, oder schon bei geringen Niederschlägen, gelöst haben. Dann liegen sehr gute Bedingungen für viele Pflanzen vor (hier: "Lampranthus spectabilis"). Sogar anspruchsvolle Weingewächse (Santorin (Wein)) gedeihen auf der ganzen Insel.

Diese, seit 650ka fünfte, große Vulkanaktivität, verschüttete die mit der „Minoischen Hochkultur“ verbundene prähistorische Siedlung Akrotiri) metertief. Die Grabungsstätte wird erst seit 1967 archäologisch erschlossen. Die Ausbruchsschichten, inklusive der stark erodierten Deckschicht, sind gut erkennbar.
