Preliminary work is getting under way to demolish the 600-foot auxiliary lock (nearest to the Kentucky bank) and the 360x56 foot lock, which was originally completed in 1872 as a two-chamber lock known by the name of its designer, Theodore Scowden (Chief Engineer, Louisville and Portland Canal Company). Many stone blocks from that lock's masonry have been removed and can be seen carefully laid out on either side of the entrance bay. Some will be reassembled for a historical display, while others will be distributed for use around the city.
A new 1200-foot lock will be built here, opening in 2009, to go along with the existing 1200-foot lock.
