He thereforetermed it contracture rheumatismal des nourrices, butlater on he observed the trouble in children and in adultswith intestinal obstruction, and so abandoned the lactationtheory. It was Trousseau who first discovered the veryimportant fact that these attacks could be excited by com-pression of the arteries and nerve-trunks of the affected ex-tremity.
