Description1939 Mercury Model 99A Eight Sedan (28601764755).jpg
This is the first of the Mercurys; Edsel Ford introduced the 'Mercury' in 1939 as a model to fill the gap between the basic Ford V8, and the luxury upmarket Lincoln Zephyr. The Mercury shared no panels with Ford or the Lincoln, although design-wise the three were clearly related. The Mercury was also longer and wider than the Ford, styling featured curved fenders, rounded body lines, and a crisp and pointy front end.
Available in either 2 or 4 door 'beetleback' sedans, a notchback sedan coupe, and a convertible coupe. A convertible sedan was added in 1940.
1940 saw a mild facelft, the headlights and grille were updated, before a major revision in 1941 when Mercury started sharing bodies with Ford.
The engine was pure Ford flathead V8, bored out from 221 cu in to 239.4 to develop an additional 10 horsepower.
