中文（臺灣）：埔里社對外交通最早開通的「埔里社輕鐵線」，原由「埔南公司」取得路線經營權，後轉讓給「埔里社製糖會社」增資進行路線延長及修繕，終於在明治44年(1911)11月7日舉行開通始業式，這條輕軌全長約20.6公里，從埔里出發通往水頭，經由耶馬溪峽谷，經過加道坑、大林、五城然後到湳仔(名間)，接續明治製糖的二水線至南投或二水接縱貫鐵路，後由於集集線完成，才縮減為埔里至外車埕(今水里鄉車埕)。
「埔里社輕鐵線」通車後從此大大加快埔里貨物與客運的運送便利，在商品的供應上對埔里商況促進大繁榮發展。大正2年(1913)臺灣製糖株式會社併購「埔里社製糖會社」，從此成為台糖鐵道文化的一員。圖為埔里社輕鐵手押台車通過水頭庄前的風景舊影，約攝於大正3年左右(1914)，推測為今均頭國中前到水源地這一段的水頭路沿線側。由臺灣製糖會社埔里社製糖所經營的這條「埔里社輕鐵」手押台車營業線，除供社用品的搬運外，也供一般旅客及貨物運送。圖所見正在通過埔里水頭庄前的成排臺車，上面滿載埔里社製糖所的砂糖與蔗苗，可見有一穿白色文官服的會社官員隨行押運，因為埔里社至魚池五城間的這段鐵道是上坡，需要人、牛一起奮力拖拉推進，十分辛苦。百年前埔里對外交通臺車的舊影，真是萬分珍貴。 圖：感謝林志明醫師提供 |
