Nicholle Marie Tom (born March 23, 1978)[1] is an American actress. She is best known for playing the role of Maggie Sheffield on the CBS sitcom The Nanny (1993 to 1999). She appeared as Ryce Newton in the film Beethoven (1992) and it's sequel Beethoven's 2nd (1993). She provided the voice of Ryce for the animated series, Beethoven (1994 to 1995). She has also voiced Supergirl in the DC Animated Universe.

Early life[edit]

Tom was born in Hinsdale, Illinois. She is the twin sister of actor David Tom. She guest starred with him on an episode of Criminal Minds in 2008. They have one older sister, actress Heather Tom. Her siblings have worked together on The Young and the Restless and One Life to Live.[2][1][3]

When Tom was eight, her family moved from Chicago, Illinois to Seattle, Washington because her father's job transferred him. A year later, her mother brought all three children to Los Angeles for pilot season. They relocated there permanently, with Tom's father staying behind in Seattle and her parent's divorcing. Her mother got a job as a speech therapist for the Pasadena school system, while the children began acting careers.[4]

Career[edit]

Tom's first television role was on Jim Henson's Mother Goose Stories.[5] She made a guest appearance on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air in 1991.[6] She then landed her first big break, playing Ryce Newton in the 1992 comedy film Beethoven.[7] She received a Young Artist Award nomination for her role in the film.[8]

Tom took on a dramatic recurring role, playing troubled teen Sue Scanlon on Beverly Hills, 90210.[6] She reprised her role as Ryce Newton for the film Beethoven's 2nd in 1993.[9] She received another Young Artist Award nomination for the sequel.[10] Tom also voiced the character of Ryce for the Beethoven animated series.[5]

She was cast as Maggie Sheffield, the eldest daughter of Maxwell Sheffield (Charles Shaughnessy), on the CBS sitcom The Nanny, playing the role from 1993 until the show's cancellation in 1999.[11][5] She received four Young Artist Award nominations for her role on the show.[10][12][13]

During her time on The Nanny, Tom appeared in numerous television films. She played Jacy Woodman in the NBC mini-series Bloodlines: Murder in the Family in 1993.[14] She starred in Season of Change, a World War II era drama.[15] In 1996, Tom played the daughter of Mel Harris in What Kind of Mother Are You?[16] She played a teen seduced by an older man (Gary Cole) in For My Daughter's Honor (also known as Indecent Seduction).[17] In 1997, Tom co-starred with Brian Austin Green in Unwed Father.[18]

In 1998, Tom played Delphi B. on the sci-fi series Welcome to Paradox.[19] She voiced Supergirl in The New Batman Adventures (1998) and Superman: The Animated Series (1998-2000).[20]

Tom played Alexis in the 1999 drama film The Sterling Chase.[21] She played Tracy in the 2000 film Panic.[22]

In 2000, she played Sarah Bryann in the Fox Family television film, Ice Angel. In 2001, she portrayed a teen reporter, Cassie, in The Princess Diaries.

In 2006, she co-starred in the IFC original The Minor Accomplishments of Jackie Woodman as Tara,[5]: 693  an underling at a film production company. Tom played a small role in "Loose Ends", the September 20, 2007 episode of Burn Notice.[23]

In March 2008, she starred in the Lifetime film, Her Only Child, that premiered on March 22, 2008. She guest-starred alongside brother David, who played her character's brother in "Damaged", the April 2, 2008, episode of Criminal Minds. She guest-starred on the May 4, 2008, episode of Cold Case.

She competed on the twenty-fourth season of Worst Cooks in America, the show's seventh celebrity edition titled That's So '90s, airing in April and May 2022.[24]

Theme parks[edit]

Tom reprised her role as Kara Kent / Supergirl for the Justice League: Alien Invasion 3D dark ride at Warner Bros. Movie World in Australia as well as the seven Justice League: Battle for Metropolis dark rides across Six Flags theme parks in the United States and Mexico.[citation needed]
