The article states that "it was found that the bomb doors could not be closed because of a complete loss of hydraulic power. Williamson nevertheless brought HE239 and the remainder of his crew back for a safe landing at West Malling, Kent, where this photograph was taken."
It is truly impressive as it is, but I cannot but wonder if the landing was conducted with the wheels down, or a "belly flop". I was under the impression that without hudraulic pressure the Wellington could not lower its undercarriadge. (The B17 had an emergency crank that could be employed).
Could this be clarified by the eminently knowledgeable (and other shameless flattering) Wiki-staff?
