English: Siege of Paris 1870-1871, Pigeon Post Medal for French Military Communications.

Bronze medallion, d. = 63 mm.

During the course of the siege, pigeons were regularly taken out of Paris by balloon. Initially, one of the pigeons carried by a balloon was released as soon as the balloon landed so that Paris could be apprised of its safe passage over the Prussian lines.

A pigeon is released by the city goddess Lutetia sitting l. on a cannon. In the background up at r. a hot air balloon carrying homing pigeons. 2 lines in exergue: "PARIS 1870-1871"/ A pigeon landing l., curved above: "MINISTÈRE DE LA GUERRE", 2 lines in exergue: "COMMUNICATIONS AÉRIENNES". Button 12.
