The string by which the instrument is attached tothe handle is generally of twisted vegetable fibre, andthe handle itself the rib of a small monkey. In allother respects, however, it is very similar to the Jews-harp of the Peninsular Malays, The flutes used by the Semang of Kedah are oftwo kinds, the common bamboo mouth-flute and thenose-flute. Both are occasionally though rarely usedto accompany their songs. The common flute is usually about a foot long andis made of a segment of young bamboo.
