Reason: Vermeer's earliest work ( Saint Praxedis is possibly earlier but its autograph is disputed, although that didn't stop it selling for £6 million at a Christie's sale this month). Martha, with her eyes downcast, evokes several of Vermeer's later canvases such as The Milkmaid .
